Most parents will want to fit some form of bed rail to their kids’ beds when they first move them from their cots to their next beds. The child needs this progression from a baby bed to their first big child bed so its an important thing to get right.
Now the child will be wanting to feel like a big boy or girl at this stage and if they have older brothers or sisters then they may want to have a big bed like them. Whilst this is something that you will want to give them as best you can you also need to be mindful of their safety.
Children who are moving from their cot to their first big bed are still fairly young. They will still be prone to wriggling in their sleep and therefore have the increased risk of falling out of their beds as they sleep. If a child falls out of bed whilst they are asleep they can obviously hurt themselves. Depending on how they fall out they could quite easily fall on their head and suffer a nasty injury.
Therefore you need to get the balance right between making them feel like a big child and ensuring they are kept safe when they sleep.
The type of bed rail you choose is an important part of getting this balance right.
The traditional wooden bed guards are very large and cumbersome things and can often make children still feel like they are in a cot and therefore still a baby. There is also a safety issue with some of these as you must be careful that gaps aren’t left between the wooden guard and the side of the bed in which the child can get their head trapped and suffocate.
Another alternative is the more modern material bed guard which still is fitted as a side to the bed. Again this can feel like a cot side to the child and therefore make them still feel like a baby. However, it is less likely that there will be a gap in which the child will get their head stuck. The material is also softer than the hard wood of the traditional bed guard and therefore more comfortable for the child and less likely they bang their head on it and hurt themselves.
Probably the safest bed rails to use are either the inflatable or foam bed variety. These are fitted either in their own bed sheet or under the existing bed sheets so they appear much more discreet on the bed. This means the child feels like they are in their own big child’s bed. There are no gaps left so no chances of the head becoming stuck and because they are made from soft materials they are really comfortable and won’t injure the child if they bang against them.
